Enjoy summer without missing out on sleep

We love the travel, and the kids enjoy the break from school, but the change in our schedules during the summer can wreak havoc on our sleep. With heat, humidity, heavy foods and drink consumed during summer cookouts, and extended hours of dayight, a great night’s sleep in the summer can be tough to come by. We've compiled some of the tips that help us to maintain our sleep during the summer months.

1. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can contribute to poor sleep by causing you to wake up during the night feeling thirsty. Its side effects, such as headaches and muscle cramps and spasms, can keep you from falling asleep. It's even more important with summer's heat and humidity to stay hydrated during the day so you can sleep well at night. If you're not a dedicated water drinker, you can stay hydrated by eating foods with high water content like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and tomatoes, as well as by drinking other beverages.

2. Add Aromatherapy

Lavender aromatherapy has been found to help to promote peaceful sleep: “One study found that lavender oil aromatherapy calmed the nervous system—lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature as well as changing brain waves to a more relaxed state. Lavender can also help with mild insomnia and provide better quality of sleep.” For a great night’s sleep, consider sleeping on one of our tiara cottons or tiara silks® aromatherapy pillows, which include lavender sachets.

3. Turn Out the Lights

Extended daylight can be great for having more time in the day to experience summer’s joys, but it can negatively affect your sleep schedule when you can't shut out the light. We recommend dark, black-out shades or an eye mask to help ensure a completely dark environment. Technology devices should also be tucked away at least 30 minutes prior to bed. Screens of phones, computers, TVs, and other technology emit light that can make it difficult for your body to relax and begin to wind down.

4. Switch to Summer Bedding

Heavy bedding can make it difficult to stay cool in the summer. Keeping a lightweight, breathable comforter or duvet on the bed is important to maintaining a cozy, yet cool, sleeping environment during even the hottest summer months. We recommend summer-weight comforters that are cool and breathable but still provide a luxurious night’s sleep.

5. Continue Your Bedtime Routine

The repetitive activities of a bedtime routine during the 90 minutes before you go to bed can drastically improve your sleep. Whether your routine involves relaxing in the bath, drinking tea, reading, or breathwork, you can benefit from continuing that routine during the summer.

Get a great night’s sleep during the summer months so you can enjoy all the fun of summer.
