If you have done everything else to create a healthy sleeping environment, but you just can’t bring yourself to say goodnight to your iPhone or iPad and leave them in another room, consider the “Night Shift” mode. Last year, Apple introduced the “Night Shift” mode to its iPhones and iPads. This feature allows your device to adjust its display to a warmer, less blue light at scheduled times.

Scientists are studying the effect of light, particularly blue light, on the suppression of melatonin, the hormone that helps us to become sleepy and remain asleep. It seems as if there is no conclusive evidence as to how and how much light from the screens of small devices, in any shade, might negatively affect your sleep, particularly in light of all the other factors to be considered. These factors include stress, pain, medications, food and drink, and sleep environment.

Whether or not the blue light actually affects the quality of your sleep, you might consider the change to “Night Shift” as a first step in separating yourself from your iPhone or iPad on the path toward creating a soothing sanctuary for a great night’s sleep.
