Hotel Towel Secrets: How the Pros Do It (And How You Can, Too)

stack of waffle weave towels

You walk into a hotel room, and something immediately feels right and relaxing. The bed is crisp. The lighting is warm. And there, in the bathroom, is a bath mat and a stack of towels so perfectly folded, so luxuriously thick, so impossibly white that you almost don't want to use them.

Almost.

We're in the business of supplying those towels to boutique hotels, full-service resorts, and the kind of spas where a robe appears before you even ask. And we're here to let you in on everything the hospitality industry knows about towels, from how they're chosen to how they're displayed. There's no reason your home bathroom can't feel like a five-star experience, especially heading into summer.

Why Do Hotel Towels Feel Different?

Let's start at the source, because the display is only half of it. Hotel towels feel exceptional because they are exceptional. It comes down to a few key factors.

1. How Do Hotels Choose Towels for the Bath, the Spa, and the Pool?

Weight. Towel weight is measured in grams per square meter, or GSM. Luxury hotel bath towels and coordinated bath mats typically run between 300 and 900 GSM. Towels from 300-400 GSM are lightweight, allowing quicker drying time. Depending on the towel’s intended use—think of pool, spa, and hair towels—you may want a lower GSM. However, over 500 GSM produces the dense, plush feel of the bath towels you're used to at high-end properties. Following is the comparative weights of down etc’s hotel bath, pool, and gym towels

Material. Cotton, the most common fiber used for towels and robes, is a soft, fluffy fiber that is naturally breathable and absorbent as it allows air and water to pass through the yarns. For this reason, most of down etc’s bath towels are made with 100% cotton. Long-staple cotton is the gold standard of the hospitality industry. It produces a softer, more absorbent fabric that gets better with every wash. In addition to our 100% long-staple cotton terry towels, we’ve introduced our 100% cotton waffle weave towel set. The waffle weave on the front side keeps these terry towels crisp and cool.

Color. Hotels choose white towel as they communicate cleanliness, they launder beautifully, and they create a visual uniformity that makes any bathroom feel more like a suite. They also happen to look stunning against almost any tile or decor. That’s why we provide our hotel customers with white. We also give you the option of color with our unique waffle towel set (seen above in cover image).

2. How Do Hotels Stack and Display Their Bath, Spa, and Pool Towels?

Here's where it gets fun. The display of towels in hospitality settings is a genuine craft, and housekeeping teams are trained in it. There are a handful of standard techniques, and each one can be done at home with the right towels and a few minutes of practice.

The Classic Trifold Stack on a Shelf or Hanging on a Rack

This is the workhorse of hotel bathroom displays. It’s the neat, tight stack you see on the edge of a vanity or on a towel shelf. Here's how it's done:

  1. Lay the towel flat on a clean surface.
  2. Fold one long edge to the center, then fold the other long edge over it, creating a long, narrow rectangle.
  3. Fold the towel into thirds from the short end.
  4. Stack with the folded edges facing out and aligned, creating clean, sharp lines or hang over a rack next to each other.

The key to a professional-looking stack is consistency. Every towel folded to the same dimensions, every edge aligned. Stack three to five for a display that looks intentional rather than incidental.

The Roll

Hotel spas and pools often use rolled towels, displayed in a basket, on a tray, or lined up on a shelf. The roll is slightly more casual than the trifold but no less elegant when done well.

  1. Lay the towel flat.
  2. Fold up one short edge about six inches.
  3. Flip the towel over so the folded edge is on the bottom.
  4. Fold one long side to the center, then the other, overlapping slightly.
  5. Roll tightly from the unfolded end toward the folded edge.
  6. The folded edge creates a clean, finished "cuff" at the top of the roll.

Rolled towels are particularly fitting for summer at home, when a stack of rolled pool towels by the back door is both practical and welcoming.

The Decorative Fan Fold

The fan fold is the decorative flourish of hotel bathroom displays. It’s the one you see on the top towel of a stack, usually done with the washcloth.

  1. Starting from the short end of the towel, fold in accordion pleats roughly two inches wide.
  2. Pinch the pleated end together and fan out the folds.
  3. Lay flat on top of a folded stack or tuck into another washcloth, as above.

It's a simple technique that looks surprisingly elegant, and it immediately signals that someone has put thought into the placement. Some hotels add a twist by folding towels into special shapes that reflect the hotels’ aesthetics or sense of humor. “Towel art” has become “a staple for hotels and cruise lines.”

3. How Do You Set Up Your Own Hotel-Style Towel Display?

Now that you know the techniques, here's how to put it all together for your home.

Start with the right towels. This is the non-negotiable foundation. The most perfectly executed fan fold on a thin, pilling towel is not going to give you the effect you're after. Invest in towels with the appropriate GSM of quality cotton, in white or a single cohesive color. You'll feel the difference immediately, and so will your guests.

Pick a display style that matches your space. A sleek, modern bathroom suits the tri-fold stack on a floating shelf. A warmer, more rustic bathroom calls for rolled towels in a wicker basket. A pool bathroom or mudroom works well with a mix: a basket of rolled towels for grab-and-go, and a neatly folded stack for display.

Keep sets together. Hotel bathrooms display towels in sets — bath towel, hand towel, washcloth — folded and stacked or hanging in proportion to each other. Grouping your towels by size and keeping the sets uniform creates that signature "room is ready" look.

Don't skip the details. A small tray under a stack, a sprig of eucalyptus tucked into a rolled basket, or a monogrammed washcloth on top are the details that elevate a bathroom display from tidy to genuinely beautiful. Hotels think carefully about every element in a guest's eyeline, and there's something to be said for bringing that same intention to your own home. Be the perfect host and provide your guests with an opal wash™ makeup remover washcloth to eliminate their worry about leaving makeup or dirt on your pristine white towels.

4. When Is the Right Time to Upgrade Your Towels? Right Now.

Summer is when towels really earn their keep with pool days, outdoor showers, guests staying over, and children in and out of the sprinkler. There's nothing quite like reaching for a thick, fresh towel at the end of a long, sunny day. It's also the time of year when a well-appointed bathroom or pool area makes a real impression. Whether you're hosting a pool party, welcoming family, or simply want your home to feel like a retreat, the right towels, displayed the right way, make a difference that's immediate. We supply the same towels that luxury hotels trust for bath, pool, and gym. Browse the full collection and find the weight, material, and finish that's right for your space. Your guests won't know why your bathroom feels like a hotel. But they'll notice.

5. How Do You Launder Your Towels to Keep Them Hotel Fresh?

Hotels use institutional laundries to handle the large quantities of towels and wash any new towels prior to use. We suggest you do the same. Wash your towels at a temperature under 40°C (104°F), which is a warm wash, to keep them looking and feeling their best; however, you may increase the temperature up to 60°C (140°F) at which temperature dust mites will be killed. It takes several washes for towels to achieve their maximum absorbency, softness, and fluffiness. To keep your white towels brilliantly white, wash them with other white towels only and avoid using fabric softener, as it leaves a coat on the toweling loops, which reduces their absorbency.

Treat yourself and your guests to hotel bathroom luxury.
