Should You Sleep Naked? Weighing the Benefits and Drawbacks

woman sleeping

For something so simple, the question of whether to sleep naked sparks surprisingly strong opinions. Some people swear by it, while others can't imagine ditching their pajamas. Like most personal choices, sleeping in the buff comes with possible advantages and potential downsides worth considering.

The Benefits of Sleeping Naked

1. Temperature regulation can help you fall asleep faster

Your body naturally drops in temperature as you fall asleep, and this cooling process is essential for quality rest. The faster you cool down, the faster you can fall asleep, according to an article on clevelandclinic.org. Sleeping naked may allow heat to dissipate more efficiently, which can help you fall asleep faster and experience deeper sleep cycles. This is particularly helpful if you tend to run hot at night or live in a warm climate.

There is a reason a hot bath can help prepare you for sleep as part of a bedtime routine. The hot bath causes your core body temperature to rise. When you step out of the bath, your core temperature begins to drop, which helps signal your body it’s time for sleep, according to a study cited by The Healthline Editorial Team.

2. Women find benefits in letting their skin breathe

Letting your body breathe without the constriction of clothing can reduce moisture buildup and irritation, particularly in areas prone to chafing or fungal infections. For women specifically, sleeping without underwear may reduce the risk of yeast infections by keeping the genital area cooler and drier.

3. Men can find a potential fertility boost

Men concerned with sperm count want to avoid high temperatures for their testicles. Keeping them cool by removing underwear, particularly tight-fighting underwear, might benefit sperm count.

4. It's convenient and cost-effective

No pajamas means less laundry, no twisted fabric waking you up in the middle of the night, and no need to invest in sleepwear. It's the ultimate minimalist approach to bedtime.

5. There are potential relationship benefits

Skin-to-skin contact with a partner can boost oxytocin levels, sometimes called the "bonding hormone," which may improve relationship satisfaction and reduce stress, according to an article on healthline.com.

The Drawbacks to Sleeping Naked

1. You’ll want to wash your sheets more often

“Medical experts advise washing your sheets at least once a week,” according to health.clevelandclinic.org. That’s because your bedding collects the good, the bad, and the ugly, including everything from the expensive lotions you apply at bedtime to the sweat, saliva, and dead skin cells you shed all night. That makes your sheets a perfect environment for bacteria to grow and dust mites to thrive. Washing and drying your sheets can remove dirt you may not see, as well as kill the dust mites.

Since most of us aren’t living in a hotel in which we can request fresh linens every day, changing your sheets at least once a week is the recommendation. When you sleep without pajamas, you lose the barrier between your sheets and your body's natural oils, sweat, and dead skin cells. That means you'll need to wash your bedding more frequently to maintain cleanliness.

2. You might get cold at night

While sleeping naked helps if you're too warm, it can leave you uncomfortably cold if your room temperature drops during the night or if you have poor circulation. Waking up shivering defeats the goal of improving your sleep.

3. Emergency situations can become awkward

Whether it's a fire alarm, an unexpected visitor, a sick child, or a household emergency, being caught without clothes adds an extra layer of stress and delay when seconds might count.

4. It's not for everyone's living situation

If you have roommates, live with family members, or have young children who might wander into your room, sleeping naked may not be practical or comfortable for you or others in your household.

5. Some people just don't find it comfortable

Personal preference matters. There is a psychological comfort of wearing pajamas, whether it's the security of fabric, maintaining boundaries, or simply habit. Better sleep comes from feeling relaxed and comfortable, which looks different for everyone.

The bottom line is that there's no universal right answer here. If you sleep alone or with a partner who's on board, maintain good sheet hygiene, and find that sleeping naked improves your sleep quality, it's worth trying for the possible benefits. On the other hand, if you prefer the comfort and security of sleepwear, throw on the jammies.

The best sleepwear choice is the one that helps you sleep soundly through the night.
