January is the time when many of us consider refreshing and renewing our bedrooms. That’s why everyone is out with their lists of the trends for the coming year. Although creating your individual space in the way that appeals to you is what matters most, we thought some of these expected trends might provide inspiration if you’re looking to make a change.
6 Big Trends in Bedroom Design: It’s All About Your Lifestyle
While the need for quality sleep is constant and a bedroom conducive to sleep—including the right pillows and bedding— is a necessary feature, the design of your bedroom can change over time. Here are some of the trends that reflect our changing lifestyles in 2025. They all share the goal of creating a bedroom that is a sanctuary for relaxation and sleep.
1. Personalization of Your Sleep Space
While hotel rooms might be standardized in a way that will appeal to the variety of guests who visit, your bedroom needs to appeal only to you. Designers are recognizing individuality as a feature of bedrooms in 2025.
We’re seeing incorporation into bedrooms of unique pieces of furniture as opposed to entire bedroom sets. These pieces might serve several purposes to maximize use of small spaces. Think seating that also provides storage or a desk that can be closed, so you need not see your work when you’re winding down to sleep. A custom built-in wardrobe, bookcase, or seating area can look beautiful. It also “adds practical value, making it easier to keep the space organized.” These pieces make the space functional, as well as restorative, for the way you live your life.
We’re also seeing the use of unique pieces and collections, which reflect moments from your life, as décor. They will be chosen intentionally for meaning but not so many as to “come off cluttered.” You can expect “a sense of individuality that mass-produced pieces simply can’t replicate.” The bottom line is a room you’ve designed just for you, “[w]hether it’s a bedroom vanity moment for the glamour gal, a cozy reading corner for the fantasy nerd, or a record player for winding down, it’s all about individuality,” according to ELLE DECOR.
2. Earth-Toned Colors with Bold Touches
We’re always looking for the colors that will create the right atmosphere for settling into sleep. Designers are seeing a move away from cooler colors and toward warmer, earthy tones, including rich beiges, terracottas, and browns. They’re expecting to see “moodier bedroom colors” in darker tones that create the feeling of “being wrapped in a cozy, protective space.”
Pantone has named “Mocha Mousse, a warming, brown hue imbued with richness,” as its 2025 Color of the Year. “It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort,” according to the Pantone Color Institute. Elle Décor A-Listers are anticipating these “muddied” colors that “evoke the calm patina of natural materials” will be the trend in 2025. In addition to earthy tones, you’ll see earthy textures in “materials like raw wood and stone.”
At the same time, there is a trend away from minimalism toward the intentional use of bold patterns and rich colors to reflect individual personalities. That might mean “[m]odern plaids and large florals.” It can include “[h]eadboards in vibrant colors and whimsical shapes including arches and scallops.” Designers are looking forward to “neutral bedroom palettes with daring splashes of color.”
3. Layers of Texture
You can create a rich-looking, cozy bed by layering your bedding. It’s all about different textures. Think of smooth cotton sateen sheets, a jacquard-patterned duvet cover encasing your down comforter, a cashmere throw blanket at the foot of the bed, and velvet throw pillows at the head. They can all be one tone, but the layering of fabrics and textures will create depth. This type of “intentional layering gives a bed a polished look without sacrificing comfort.”
4. Sustainability
You will continue to see a trend toward sustainability in the materials used in our bedrooms. It’s repurposed furniture or furniture crafted from sustainably sourced wood. When it comes to bedding, that means products that are natural and organically manufactured, kind to both you and the environment.
An extension of the goal of sustainability is the expected increase in biophilic features incorporating natural elements into homes and bedrooms, including plants, waterfalls, and rock walls. From “[h]ouseplants and natural elements like driftwood and woven baskets” to “windows that blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces,” the goal will be a connection with nature.
5. Wellness
Your activities during the day have an impact on your sleep, particularly what you do during the 60-90 minutes before you go to bed. Creating a bedroom environment that caters to your bedtime routine—whether that involves space for nighttime yoga, journaling, breathwork, aromatherapy, or music—will continue to trend. Hotels will continue to offer wellness services including those specifically focusing on improving their guests’ sleep.
We recognized some time ago the trend toward happy couples sleeping in separate beds or, even, separate rooms in an article on “sleep divorce” linked below. Some designers are taking that one step further “to create adjoining bedrooms from separate ones.”
6. Technology
Technology is here to stay. Although you want to avoid screens before bed, there are bedroom features that can help to create a better sleeping environment—one that is dark, cool, and quiet. That includes smart bedroom features like circadian lighting, temperature control, and white noise systems. Smart furniture with built-in technology will keep the machinery out of sight.
We wish you the one-of-a-kind bedroom in which you can find the quality sleep you need.
