Our body temperatures begin to drop at night as part of our preparation for sleep. “Keeping your bedroom cool facilitates this natural occurrence and makes it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep.” Although the optimal sleep temperature for individuals can differ slightly, “A bedroom temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit helps promote sleep,” according to the National Sleep Foundation. A sleep environment that is too hot (or too cold) can disrupt our sleep.
Summer-Weight Down Comforters Support Healthy Sleep
Since healthy sleep is essential to a healthy lifestyle, we’ve dedicated ourselves to designing the bedding that will support a great night's sleep. We sleep best in a cool environment, which means finding ways to improve our sleep in the summer can be a challenge. Read "5 Sleep Tips for the Summer Months," linked below, for tips to set the stage for great summer sleep. One of these tips, switching to summer bedding, can help you to maintain a cozy, yet cool, sleep environment during even the hottest summer months.
1. Why Is a Summer-weight Comforter a Good Investment?
We love the combination of cotton and down in our down comforters and believe it’s just what your bed needs for lightweight bedding you’ll enjoy all summer. Down fill is light and fluffy without feeling heavy, making it a top choice for comforters and pillows. For those who prefer a down alternative, we’ve developed our aquaplush® line of comforters in a variety of weights, including our aquaplush air down alternative comforter with mesh inserts. Both our down- and aquaplush-filled comforters are covered in cotton fabric ticking to maximize air flow and keep your sleep cool. Summer weight comforters are a lighter option than traditional comforters, offering slight warmth without a stifling feeling. They are ideal for those who enjoy sleeping cool but with more than a sheet. All of our comforters are made with 100% cotton fabric ticking for the ease of cleaning and beautiful finish and feel. When looking to add a summer-weight comforter to your bedding, it’s essential to invest in the right one.2. Which Summer-weight Comforter Is Right for Me?
Several factors come into play when choosing the right comforter including fill, weight, size, and the look you want to achieve. You can read about each of these factors in “Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing a New Comforter,” linked below.
If you’re looking for a lighter-weight summer comforter, you’ll begin by deciding whether you prefer down or down alternative fill. We have chosen to manufacture our premium down comforters and our essential down comforters with white goose down fill for the maximum level of comfort and luxury with a natural fill. Both come in summer weights. In our aquaplush® line of down alternative comforters, we’ve created the same cozy comfort without the down. We offer our aquaplush® lite with the lightest amount of our signature aquaplush® fill and our aquaplush® air with vented mesh inserts for those who sleep hot or live in a warm climate.
Once you’ve chosen the fill you prefer, you’ll select the size. This decision depends upon the size of the mattress and how you like to make your bed. If you want the sides to hang to the bottom of the box spring, you will need to calculate a size above your mattress size. Once you’ve selected the right size for the look of your bed, you can choose the cover that fits the aesthetic of your bedroom. We offer a variety of 100% cotton comforter covers that are sold individually or as part of coordinated sheet sets.
3. How do I Care for My Summer-weight Comforter?
Quality comforters are investments that should last many years. To maintain your comforters, be sure to read "How to Clean and Care for Your Down Comforter," linked below. We recommend the consistent use of a comforter protector or cover that can be removed for laundering regularly with the rest of the bed linens.
Down and feather comforters and aquaplush® hypoallergenic down alternative comforters should be laundered if there are visible stains or noticeable odors. Even without visible stains or odors, your comforters should be washed and thoroughly dried each season and before storing.
Our comforters can be dry cleaned or machine washed. If machine washing, do so in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent in a washing machine large enough to allow movement in the drum. Do not bleach. Tumble dry on low in a front load dryer until thoroughly dried to kill dust mites and to prevent mold growth. They may be dried along with dryer balls or clean tennis balls in to open the fill and create maximum fluff. You can find more information on caring for your down etc bedding under Product Care.
4. Can I Use a Summer-weight Comforter All Year Round?
If you sleep hot, you may want to stick with a summer-weight comforter all year. If you share your bed and one of you sleeps hot while the other does not, you might consider exchanging your larger comforter for two twin-size comforters. That way, you can each choose the weight that works best. Just because you share a bed doesn’t mean you have the same sleep preferences. Our essential white goose down twin-size comforter comes in a 20 oz summer weight for those who sleep warm and a 34 oz winter weight for those who sleep cold.
A comfortable sleep environment is part of a great night’s sleep and temperature is a critical part of that environment. So, unless you want to sleep in separate beds or bedrooms—and that is the right solution for many happy couples consider separate comforters.
