September was National Self-Care Awareness Month, but we want to remind you to continue to take care of yourself as we enter the holiday season, beginning with Halloween next week and continuing through the new year. We don’t mean taking yourself off for a week at a spa—although that would be lovely—or cutting out holiday toasts and treats—which would not be lovely. We mean taking simple steps to be kind to yourself as you brilliantly steer everyone else through the holidays.
Self-Care Is Necessary Even During the Holidays
Self-care must be practiced year-round, and that includes the holiday season. “Self-care actions are habits, practices and lifestyle choices – things that we can do to help look after ourselves and lead a healthier life,” according to the World Health Organization. “Self-care is the first line of response for all healthcare.”
Self-Care Is a Regular Bedtime Routine
Sleep is not something you can wait to catch up on later (when the holidays are over). Sufficient, quality sleep is an important way you care for yourself all year. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: The 60-90 minutes before bed can make a big difference to how well you sleep at night. Bedtime rituals prepare your mind and body for sleep. Whether it’s taking a bath, brushing your teeth, reading, journaling, or focused breathing, do what works for you. Make part of your routine turning off or covering electronics that trigger stress or create ambient light that can negatively affect your sleep. This can help you avoid seeing the time or waiting text messages as you climb back in bed after a trip to the bathroom.
Self-Care Is Sliding into a Fresh, Clean Bed
There is something relaxing about sliding into a fresh, clean bed at the end of the day. Crisp, clean sheets feel and smell good. They're also good for your health as they are free from dust mites, as well as the oil, dirt, sweat, and saliva that accumulates on everyone's sheets. Clean sheets are one of the joys of staying in a fine hotel, a reward at the end of a long day, and the right way to begin a great night’s sleep.
Self-Care Is Giving Yourself a Break
Stop being so hard on yourself for a little while. Take your mind off of everyone, including yourself, by relaxing.
Self-Care Is Keeping It Simple
This is why we’re fans of the Danish lifestyle philosophy of hygge. It’s about appreciating the time spent with family and friends, or in your own company, simply enjoying the warmth of the moment. It’s not intended to be expensive or showy. Quite the opposite. It’s intended to be warm, comfortable, and easy.
Wishing you a gentle start to the holiday season.
